Hastings College celebrated a major milestone as crews raised the final structural beam for the 1882 residence and learning center on October 21st. The ceremony marked the “topping out” of the new building, which is scheduled to open in the fall.

“We are just ecstatic and amazed at what’s being built on this campus,” Hastings College President, Dr. Rich Lloyd, said during his speech. “It is a commitment to our educational model–a curated learning and living environment that values togetherness and shared experiences.”

Lloyd went on to speak about the significance of 1882, both as a symbol of the past and of the future. After thanking the many teams in charge of the project, he said, “Of course, such a spectacular building doesn’t just rise out of the ground on its own. We are deeply indebted to those who are working together to build this stunning residence.”

Gary Freeman, a representative from the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation who was a primary sponsor for the project, also spoke during the ceremony. Freeman, a Hastings College alumni, voiced his personal appreciation for The 1882. “Clearly, this is something that will be positive for the students,” Freeman said. “The foundation’s (Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation) purpose is to be a catalyst for positive change. This is all about the students at Hastings College.”
