Boar’s Head Recap

Another Boar’s Head has come and gone with a night full of good food, beautiful decorations and fun for all attendees.

Students walked into a festively decorated Kiewit Gym, with brightly lit trees and tables with gold, red and green accents. Carrie Brosman, a junior from Aurora, Neb., thought that the decorations for the event were very beautiful.

“The tables in particular were really fancy and festive, and the rest of the gym looked super nice as well. I really appreciated all the little details. The trees definitely put me in the holiday mood, too,” Brosman said.

Boar’s Head is the annual dinner hosted at the end of every year as a way to show appreciation to all students as the dinner is served by staff of Hastings College. Executive Director for the Hastings College Foundation Chelsea LeMar ‘07 was very excited to be part of this Hastings College tradition.

“I remember attending Boar’s Head as a student and enjoying the faculty and admin serving us, and now I have the privilege of serving the students. The room was buzzing with great energy, and all the organizers made Kiewit Gym look great. It is a good reminder of the strong traditions at Hastings College, and I am so proud to be part of this event and proud to be a Bronco,” LeMar said.

For the actual dinner, the Scott Dining team boasted a diverse menu, including vegetarian and gluten free options along with impressive entrees and side dishes. Candy Clifton, Assistant Dining Manager, was part of the staff that kept the food lines running smoothly. Of the food, Clifton gave it a very impressive “20 out of 10” rating for the night.

Sophomore Xander Uhrmacher from Hastings enjoyed the food as well. “I especially enjoyed the mocktails. They were fun.”

During the dinner, the students were treated to the annual “roast” of the year, where the Student Association makes a parody of a song in order to poke fun at the different groups and funny happenings on campus over the last semester. This year, it was a rendition of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Avery Usher, first-year student from Lincoln had a lot of fun at her first Boar’s Head listening to the “roast.”

“I thought it was really funny, and my favorite part was when it said, ‘And if you’ve been roasted, be grateful for the attention because baseball and basketball weren’t even mentioned,’” Usher said.

Unlike previous years, the titular boar’s head was not on display before or during the dinner. Instead, it was hidden away from the attending students and taken out only after everyone had completed their dinner. The boar’s head was displayed on a silver platter, surrounded by leafy greens with a charred lemon in its mouth and was paraded around the tables to the “Boar’s Head Carol.”

Upon completing its rounds, the animal head was left at the front of the venue for students to gawk at, and, within minutes, the boar’s head was stolen into the night, as is tradition, to be found by students within the next day right above the entrance of the Student Union.
