Hastings College has welcomed a new mental health counselor, Mrs. Roberts, who brings years of experience, a passion for student wellbeing, and a deep appreciation for the community she now serves. Roberts earned her master’s degree in social work in 2015 and has spent the past seven years working in private mental-health programs in the Hastings area.
Originally from Kearney, Roberts has lived in Hastings for about eight years. She says the supportive environment on campus is what drew her to Hastings College. “Everyone here is so kind,” she said. “I don’t feel like the new teacher because the staff and students have been so welcoming.”
Roberts specializes in supporting individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, and ADHD, and she enjoys helping college students navigate the transition into adulthood. One of her guiding beliefs is that counseling works best when both she and her students feel comfortable being themselves. “When I’m authentic, it helps students feel safe and understood,” she explained.
In her sessions, Roberts focuses on teaching practical problem-solving skills students can use long after they leave her office. She emphasizes that her counseling space is a judgment-free environment and that she strives to “meet students where they are,” no matter what challenges they face.
Outside of her work, Roberts values spending meaningful time with her family, which she says plays a major role in her happiness. She is also passionate about supporting the LGBTQ community on campus and wants students to know her office is a safe and inclusive place for everyone.
