Catching Up With Women’s Volleyball

By Seth Hill

During the 2025 volleyball season, Hastings women’s volleyball had a 6-20 record. This was the result of poor coaching, lack of team chemistry, and a poor culture. This year, the Broncos have kicked off with a strong start, currently 12-3 under new head coach Harley Rhoades.

The team has set a precedent for a “we first” culture.

Last season’s failures were highlighted by head coach John Schmidt being fired halfway through the season. This created a very negative culture, resulting in a heavily losing season. Starting libero Lainey Benson said this year is going smoothly comparatively. A much more positive environment has allowed the team to thrive.

“The biggest difference has definitely been the culture that coach Rhoades has instilled in us,” Benson said.

Rhoades detailed what he believes is the biggest difference this year.

“I’m just having a lot of fun,” he said. “I know the girls are having a lot of fun, which I know was something that didn’t happen last year.”
