Miles for Mik

On Friday, May 9th, students and staff join Physical Education Instructor Casey Molifua and associate professor of art Dr. Brian Corr as they run every mile on the hour around Heartwell Park. Molifua and Corr will begin at 6:00 a.m., and they invite anyone in the area to run or walk with them in honor of Mikaelah “Mik” Molifua or any loved one lost to cancer. Payten Henshaw, a sophomore, from Colorado Springs said, “I enjoyed it because it’s amazing to see a community come together to support such a good cause. I also enjoyed being able to move my body in such a positive way.”

Miles for Mik is a 24-hour walk/run fundraiser dedicated to raising funds for the Mikaelah Molifua Scholarship at Hastings College. This is the fourth year the duo has undertaken the journey to grow the scholarship named after Casey Molifua’s sister. Hope Holcomb, a sophomore, from Omaha said, “it was really inspiring to see everyone come together in support. It’s a great cause so for that many people to show up it  was super cool to see.”

Mik earned her undergraduate degree in English education at HC, where she also competed on the cheer and softball teams. During her time at the college, she also served as a resident assistant in Babcock Hall and led Alpha Delta Alpha sorority. After graduating, she stayed on campus to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with a physical education endorsement. She also became head coach for the Bronco Cheer and Crimson Spirit Dance teams. Mikaelah lost her life in 2020 due to a long battle with cancer.

The scholarship benefits HC athletes with financial need who carry the true “Bronco” spirit. There is also special consideration given to students with health problems. Anyone is encouraged to contribute by joining or making a donation. More details and a link to donate can be found at hastings.edu/mik. The goal for #milesformik is to grow the scholarship by $10,000, and currently, 19.6% of it is already raised.

Join the duo as they take on the challenge to raise money and awareness for cancer through the Mikaelah Molifua Scholarship and fundraiser.
