Disney has started to create live actions of their Disney movies. Some of the live action films include “Cinderella,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Mulan” and one of my favorites, “Cruella.” Now this live action has sparked a lot of controversy before and after the film was produced.
This classic 1937 Disney movie was the very first Disney princess to hit the screen and many people had lots of expectations for this movie. However, they were very disappointed and felt let down by this movie, so let’s talk about it.
First, we are going to get into the movie itself. The storyline from 1937 and 2025 show both similarities and differences. In both films, Snow White is a maid who is supposed to get killed by a guard. However, runs away to a cottage and finds the seven dwarfs, gets poisoned by the disguised evil queen and by a true love’s kiss wakes up. In the 2025 version, the characters are more complex.
Snow White and the Evil Queen have more of a relationship dynamic and have more conversations with each other. It reminds me of the backstory of “Cinderella” in the way the Evil Queen controls not only Snow White but the entire kingdom.
Another difference between the two movies is the dwarfs. The dwarfs in the 1937 version are miners that live in a cottage in the woods. In the 2025 version, they are magical creatures that have lived for 274 years. I like the magical touch that Disney gave to the live action dwarfs. I have my own things to say about the dwarfs in general but we will get to that later.
The other thing that was drastically different was the prince. In the 1937 version, the prince is in love with Snow White at first glance and is determined to be her lover. In the 2025 version, the love interest is a robin hood-styled heart-throb who steals from the monarchy to give to the poor.
It almost reminded me of “Tangled” in a way because the love interest is a fugitive. There are many parallels to other Disney movies.
One thing that I did not like about the movie was the choreography to the music. I feel like the music had a lot of potential to be great but the choreography made it seem bland. They could have done much more with it.
Now, let’s talk about the reviews themselves. According to IMDb, this movie received very grumpy reviews. The overall rating was a 1.6 out of 10 stars and was scored 40% on rotten tomatoes.
One critic made a comment about the dwarfs, saying that “we got a diverse group of CGI-enhanced ‘magical creatures’ who look like they were rejected from “The Lord of the Rings” for being too unsettling.” Another review said, “Snow White is universally hailed as a classic, yet this film stands as a disgraceful misstep in cinematic history.”
There are some positive reviews on this movie, one saying “In my opinion, ‘Snow White’ is a pretty good proposition for children who are unlikely to pay attention to imperfections – after all, it is a film aimed mainly at them.”
Overall, I think that if you ever get the chance to watch this movie, think of it as a reimagining rather than a remake.
